The History of the Oratory RC Primary and Nursery School

The Oratory RC Primary and Nursery School is located in the heart of Ladywood, Birmingham. It has a rich history rooted in the establishment of the Birmingham Oratory. The Birmingham Oratory was founded by St John Henry Newman on 1st February 1848. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Rome in 1847. In Rome, he joined the Congregation of the Oratory founded in the 16th century by St Philip Neri later known as the Apostle of Rome. The Oratory in Birmingham was first established in Maryvale, then moved to a converted gin distillery in Digbeth, and finally settled at Edgbaston in 1852.

The Present Oratory RC Primary and Nursery School

Since the times of Newman, The Oratory RC Primary and Nursery School has grown to become a thriving one form entry school welcoming 220 children from Nursery to Year 6.

At the heart of our school, is a simple but powerful mission: “Shine as to be a Light to others.” Inspired by the teachings of Jesus and rooted in the Gospel values, we strive each day to nurture a loving, respectful, and faith-filled environment where every member of our community is encouraged to grow academically, spiritually, and personally.

While our Catholic identity shapes who we are, we are proud to be a school that celebrates diversity. Our vibrant community reflects the rich tapestry of cultures, faiths, and languages that make up modern Birmingham — with over 50 languages spoken in our school family. We believe that every child is made in the image of God and that their unique heritage adds to the strength and beauty of our school.

Guided by Jesus’ greatest commandment — “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34) — we promote kindness, compassion, and understanding in all we do. We work together to ensure that every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.

In partnership with families, parishes, and the wider community, we aim to develop confident, compassionate young people who will go on to be a light in the world — living out their faith through action, service, and love.
