Homework
Homework plays an important role in supporting your child's learning and development. It helps reinforce what is taught in class, builds good study habits, and encourages responsibility and independence. At The Oratory RC Primary and Nursery School, children will receive three forms of homework each week to support key areas of the curriculum.
Reading
Reading books are provided to children at the beginning of each week. Please read with your child every night and remember to sign their reading book. If they finish the book, ask thoughtful questions about the story, characters, and any new vocabulary. Encourage them to summarise what happened and make predictions about what might happen next to deepen their understanding and enjoyment.
Spelling
At the start of each week, your child will receive a list of spellings to learn. These words will be practiced throughout the week, and a spelling test will be conducted at the end to check their progress. To help your child succeed, you can support their learning by regularly reviewing the spellings together, using fun methods like writing the words in sentences, playing spelling games, or practicing aloud. Consistent practice at home makes a big difference and helps build your child’s confidence and skills in spelling.
Common Exception Words to continue to practice at home
- Years 1 and 2 Common Exception Words
- Years 3 and 4 Common Exception Words
- Years 5 and 6 Common Exception Words
PurpleMash
PurpleMash homework is provided on a Friday and is returned on a Monday. PurpleMash enables children to consolidate learning over the week by completing a Reading comprehension or Grammar activity and Maths activity.
We kindly ask that all homework is completed and returned within the timescales set by the class teacher. This ensures that your child stays on track with their learning and allows teachers to give timely feedback. Your support in encouraging and supervising homework at home is greatly appreciated and makes a real difference in your child’s progress.
