Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
Our Mission Statement and Curriculum Drivers
Following the National Curriculum, we teach Spanish to develop communication skills and foster curiosity about the wider world. At The Oratory, learning a language helps children appreciate cultural diversity and become open, confident communicators. By celebrating differences and showing respect for others, pupils "Shine as to be a Light to Others" as they grow in empathy and global awareness.

Our Curriculum Intent
At The Oratory, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum aims to foster curiosity, confidence, and enjoyment in learning a new language in KS2 (Years 3-6). We teach Spanish, following the National Curriculum, to provide pupils with the skills to communicate effectively in another language and to develop an understanding of different cultures. Our curriculum builds progressively on prior learning, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, we promote Solidarity and Community and Participation by encouraging respect for other cultures and languages, helping pupils appreciate diversity and global citizenship.
Our Curriculum Implementation
We implement our Spanish curriculum using Language Angels, which provides a structured and progressive approach to language learning across all year groups. Lessons focus on developing vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammatical understanding through engaging activities. To deepen cultural awareness, we celebrate Spanish Day each year, giving pupils the opportunity to experience Spanish traditions, music, and food. This approach ensures that children not only learn the language but also develop an appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Spanish-speaking countries.
