Year 1
Welcome
Your Year 1 teachers are Miss Goodwin and Mrs May, and they are excited to guide the children through a fun and focused year of learning. The curriculum becomes more structured in Year 1, following the National Curriculum. Children will explore subjects such as English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, PE, and Computing, building on the foundations from Reception.
An important part of Year 1 is the Phonics Screening Check, which takes place in the summer term. To support your child’s reading progress, daily reading at home is really important. Just a few minutes each evening can make a big difference. We’re looking forward to a great year of learning and growth!

Supporting my child at home
Helping your child at home makes a big difference in their progress and confidence. Reading together every night is one of the most important things you can do—just a few minutes can really support their fluency and understanding. You can also help by practising number bonds (like pairs of numbers that make 10 or 20) to build quick mental maths skills. Finally, regular phonics practice—sounding out words and spotting tricky sounds—will help your child become a more confident and independent reader. Little and often is best!
