Music

Our Mission Statement and Curriculum Drivers

Music is taught in line with the National Curriculum, which encourages performance, listening, and composition. At The Oratory, children experience the joy and power of music through singing, instruments, and creative expression. Music brings our community together and allows every child to shine their light through celebration, reflection, and shared experiences.

Our Curriculum Intent

At The Oratory, our Music curriculum follows the National Curriculum and aims to inspire creativity, self-expression, and a lifelong love of music. We provide opportunities for all children to develop musical skills through singing, performing, composing, and listening across a range of genres and traditions.

Our curriculum builds progressively on prior learning, enabling pupils to understand musical notation and develop confidence in performance. Rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, we promote Solidarity and Community and Participation by encouraging collaboration, respect for diverse musical cultures, and shared experiences that bring joy and unity.

Our Curriculum Implementation

At The Oratory, we implement our Music curriculum using the Model Music Scheme on Charanga, which provides a structured and progressive approach to teaching music across all year groups. This scheme ensures children develop key skills in listening, performing, composing, and understanding musical notation. In addition, Year 4 pupils receive specialist class tuition from Services for Music, where they learn to play the guitar, enriching their musical experience and confidence in performance. Through these opportunities, we aim to nurture creativity, collaboration, and a love of music for all.

Whole School Curriculum Overview

Composer of the Month

To broaden musical knowledge and appreciation, each month children learn about a different composer, exploring music from diverse cultures and historical periods. This helps pupils build a rich understanding of music from the world around them and fosters respect for creativity and cultural heritage.
